Kochi: Passers-by on the Aroor-Edakochi road may have seen an energetic and intelligent lady serving food and tea to customers at a small roadside tea stand. But very few of them now that she is researching marine biology in the midst of this busy job.
Ardra has been playing this dual role of hotel supplier and student for 10 years. She started working in the hotel after completing the 10th standard. She completed a BSc Zoology and an MSc Marine Biology while working as a hotel supplier. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Science and Technology of Cochin (CUSAT).
Ardra’s father, Appukuttan, and mother Molly operate the tea stand in a rented room. Appukuttan was a porter and a mason earlier, and he opened the tearoom later. Ardra helps her parents by making tea, serving food, and washing containers from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Then she goes to college. Once back, she continues to work at the hotel until 10 p.m.
“My parents struggled a lot to raise us. So I felt I had to help them as much as I could. I can make tea and other snacks. I get to college late sometimes. But my teachers and friends know my background and they help me a lot, ”Ardra said.
Ardra is researching crabs in Lake Vembanad. She said she used to get nipped by crabs while catching them as part of her study. But she masters the art and is about to finish her research. She also plans to open a tea stand for her father after getting a good job.
