Hotel of the Month: Staybridge Suites Dundee
In this series, we go behind the front desk to learn everything from the weirdest room service requests, to fun and quirky facts, to the most heartwarming meetings. We choose a new destination and hotel each month to give you the inside scoop.
Next – Staybridge Suites Dundee, a traditional and historic building in the heart of Dundee city center with a modern twist. We spoke with the hotel manager, Dianna Bruce, who has worked at the hotel since it opened 3 years ago.
1. What was your most memorable room request?
We have many guests who stay with us to celebrate special occasions, from birthdays to weddings. One of our favorite requests was when a guest and his girlfriend were staying with us to celebrate his birthday. They were going to a Rita Ora concert in Dundee, and the girlfriend was a big fan. So the team got together and we decorated the room with Rita memorabilia and added song lyrics to the bedroom (and elevator) mirrors, along with birthday balloons and a party of Rita’s music played upon arrival. We loved being part of her special weekend – she told us it was her best birthday yet!
2. What is the strangest item a guest has forgotten or left behind?
A child left behind a puppet, and as soon as we realized this, we took pictures of the puppet around the hotel to share with the guest’s mother, so he knew his puppet was safe and sound while we sorted his “transport” home!
3. What was the most memorable reason for your stay/celebration?
We recently had a group of eight divers installing a new offshore wind farm in Dundee who stayed with us for almost a year. They have formed a great relationship with our team and have regularly shared their underwater adventures at Staybridge Social events.
4. Most recognizable guest or celebrity stay?
We tend to have lots of local sports teams staying at the hotel and lots of fans showing up to try and spot their heroes. We’ve also had quite a few dog influencers staying with us, including one of Scotland’s leading travel blogs – offering pet-friendly stays in the eyes of Casper the West Highland Terrier!
5. Interesting hotel features that guests don’t know about?
Paying homage to Dundee’s heritage and culture, many of our rooms have original features including exposed brickwork and ornate trusses. The stylish decor incorporates clever nods to the city’s past of ‘jam, jute and journalism’. The developers have worked closely with Historic Environment Scotland to ensure faithful restoration and to protect the area’s heritage. Some guests have even mentioned a connection to the old mills – via the grandmothers and great-grandmothers who worked there – so there is often a poignant moment when they see how the building that played such an important role in their family, as well as in the city, history has a new lease of life.
6. When were you most proud of the brand?
Staybridge Suites Dundee is the first and only (so far!) Staybridge Suites in Scotland, and we’re proud to have brought the brand to our city and country!
7. What is your favorite place to visit outside of the hotel?
As a huge ice hockey fan, it has to be at the Dundee Ice Arena watching the Dundee Stars! Or, if design is more your speed, we’re a stone’s throw from first Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum outside of London, next to Dundee seafront. Opened in 2018, the V&A Museum showcases the best of design from around the world where visitors can learn about the past, present and future of how design shapes our lives.
To finish, The McManus Art Gallery and Museum offers insight into Dundee’s history and is housed in a beautiful neo-Gothic style building!
8. Are there any other fun facts you would like people to know about the hotel?
As part of the hotel’s commitment to the local community, and IHG Hotels & Resorts Journey to tomorrowwe introduced a ‘shop local’ notice board in public areas promoting Dundee businesses and stocking local items – from Arran Aromatics beverage flavors Tayport Distillery – in The Pantry so guests can take home a piece of Dundee after their stay.
9. If you had to choose your favorite room, which one would you choose and why?
Room 509 is one of the team’s favorite rooms. This is a spacious duplex room with sea view. [also nearby!] The bell tower of the Indigo Hotel.
10. What is your favorite F&B offer and why?
We are fortunate to have an on-site restaurant at our resort, Daisy Tasker. Chef Stewart “Macca” Macaulay whips up a delicious dessert that’s one of my favorites – pineapple carpaccio, coconut, rum, chili peppers, and lime sorbet.
11. How would you define the hotel in three words?
Welcoming, Friendly, Historic
