Bougainville food safety policy in place

Bougainville reached an important milestone when ABG’s Department of Primary Industries, Livestock and Marine Resources officially launched the Bougainville Food Security Policy 2022 – 2035.

Bougainville Autonomous Government Minister for Primary Industries, Geraldine Paul at the launch commended the department for creating the policy as it is an important development tool as Bougainville continues on its way to the independence.

“Policies like the Bougainville Food Security Policy 2022 are important development tools; they chart a course and a roadmap for tangible development. Such policies help the government achieve global and local sustainable development goals with regards to food security,” she said.

The food security policy in alignment with the national food security policy has two main objectives which are on the one hand to contribute to the economic development of the country by generating income from agricultural products, exports, to increase income and to create jobs and secondly to ensure that the country is food secure by having enough nutritious and healthy food of good quality available at all times for consumption.

This policy was created by the GBS Primary Industries, Livestock and Marine Resources Department with technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) after consultation with inhabitants of Bougainville.

Department of Primary Industries Secretary Kenneth Dovaro said the policy is local and in line with national food safety policy.

“Food security is everyone’s business as it is fundamental to human beings on earth and this policy is not a stand-alone policy as it aligns with the National Food Security Policy.
